What is a physical therapist? What do they do?

  • Physical therapists (PTs) are state licensed health care professionals who can help patients reduce pain and improve or restore mobility
  • Viewed as “the experts in movement dysfunction”
  • PTs perform an in depth examination on each patient and develop a plan, using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability
  • PTs are required to complete a graduate degree (masters or clinical doctorate) and pass a national licensing exam. (96% of colleges/universities now offer the clinical doctorate in PT)

Areas of specialization

  • Orthopedics (joint pain, sprains, fractures, post operative care)
  • Neurology (MS, Alzheimer’s, ALS, post stroke recovery)
  • Cardiology (cardiac rehab post heart attack or cardiac surgery)
  • Vestibular system disorders (dizziness, vertigo, post concussive syndrome)
  • Pediatrics (spina bifida, torticollis, cerebral palsy, developmental delay)
  • Women’s and Men’s Health (urinary incontinence, pre/post partum care, sexual dysfunction)
